We hear a lot about organizational culture. Companies work hard to develop value systems and practices that not only reflect who they are but hopefully inspire their employees to adopt actions and behaviors that will support who they want to be. In a nutshell, culture is made up of two components: the story of who we are and the story of who we want to be.

A story well told is worth listening to.

In order to communicate your company’s culture and value system, you have to have a strategic plan that is in alignment with and supports your story. How you share that story will directly affect the “buy-in” from your employees. This means first understanding the history and legacy of your organization and how that fits into your present culture. The people who started your company, the first employees, their original mission and values, all play an important part of crafting the well-told story of why and how your company got its start.

A story well told is worth sharing.

When you’re clear about who you are and who you want to be, your story can be almost infectious, making it easy to share, from leaders to teams and from teams to clients. And if your story is really compelling, it will spread to your community and, in some cases, even the world.

A story well told is worth participating in.

When your company’s story is compelling, people want to be a part of it. This is where the foundation of understanding and aligning your business goals with your culture really pays off. Because when people want to take part in your story, you have stronger, more dedicated employees and clients who go beyond just being customers. They become advocates for your brand. That’s the sweet spot where who you are and who you want to be intersect. It’s authentic.

Let Güd Marketing help you tell your story.

This year, the team at Güd Marketing thought it would be fun to compile some unofficial holidays that you can use to help your employees and clients participate and shape your story. Available for both Apple IOS and Android, the “Make It A Güd One” app gives you some great ideas for events that can support your company’s culture and allow you to have a little fun along the way.

Maybe fun is a big part of your culture. What better way to support that ideal than National Have Fun At Work Day on January 28? It’s a time to have fun with your coworkers, despite the pressures of deadlines, meetings and workloads.

If giving back to the community is high on your list of values, then March 13, National Good Samaritan Day, gives you another reason to go above and beyond and do something nice for someone else. It can be anything from giving to your local food bank to donating blood at the American Red Cross.

How you treat your clients and each other in the workplace is a part of the culture of many organizations, so March 21, National Common Courtesy Day, is a great time to review your policies with your team. Whether it’s simply using “please” and “thank you” in your communications, being a good listener or picking up after yourself in the break room, you can use this day as a way to highlight how you expect your employees to act all year long.

So this year, as you examine your company’s story and how it shapes who you are, take the time to download our “Make It A Güd One” app and drop us a line on what days speak to you and how you plan to celebrate your company’s culture all year long.
